RESUMO

Factors that shaped and promoted cultural norms in the 1900s continue to influence current obstetric practice today. The incidence of cesarean birth too often has little to do with the health needs of the woman or the fetus and more to do with multiple factors over which the woman has no control. Nurses and midwives can reduce unnecessary cesarean births and have the necessary knowledge, competence, and skills to help women give birth without medical intervention.

RESUMO

Nurses struggle with conflicting priorities regarding the care of women during childbirth and the expectations of physicians and employers. Nurses are expected to perform technologically sophisticated interventions that were once performed by physicians, which can affect the perception of comfort that nurses traditionally offered. In this historical overview, I suggest that scientific childbirth advances have contributed to soaring cesarean rates and identify the role of the nurse as a contributor to this trend.

RESUMO

Hospitalization for heart failure accounts for a substantial portion of the overall cost of caring for these patients and is a predictor of shortened survival in patients with chronic HF. Avoidance of readmission is critical as those hospitalized with HF face a 50% rate of readmission within 6 months and 25%-35% incidence of mortality within a year.Knowledge of this syndrome is important in order to deliver comprehensive supportive care to these patients and reduce readmissions Intravenous drug therapy is an important adjunct in this effort. This article focuses on the syndrome as it relates to intravenous agents prescribed for the patient in the home setting.

RESUMO

In 1934, Colice Sayer was forcefully removed from her home and involuntarily committed to a state mental hospital following a legal proceeding she was not allowed to attend. Colice's husband initiated the complaint against her. Colice remained in the institution for 43 years as a ward of the state of New York. This study examined her life to gain an understanding of how the lives of successive generations were altered. The life history method was used to elicit the stories of the central character and her family. Hermeneutic phenomenology was used to gather and analyze the data. Two themes emerged from the data: learned expectations and retreating behaviors. Learned expectations were family rules taught to successive generations. Retreating behaviors were indirect actions observed or obliquely communicated. The loss of a mother by means of forced, legal separation and the subsequent disintegration of the family can pervasively affect successive generations.
